About Prahran

Pattern

The electorate is the state’s smallest, covering a 11 km2.   Located in the inner south-east of Melbourne. The electorate of Prahran includes the suburbs of South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor, as well as parts of Southbank, St Kilda and St Kilda East.

Diverse

The population is diverse and if we consider the spine of the electorate as Chapel Street (and it’s important to note that at one time Chapel Street thrived on being the best shopping strip in Melbourne), filled with Department stores, local design stores, and flourishing eateries) the demographic make up of Prahran varies greatly.

The Prahran community is socially progressive, and as the electorate has become gentrified particularly over the 1980’s and 1990’s the population has also diversified.

Prahran is now one of the most densified electorates in Melbourne, this means that we have a high proportion of singles and young couples living in the electorate, many of whom are doing it really tough at the moment.

Prahran voters see climate change are critical, but they also care deeply about social issues such as homelessness.  High on their list of priorities is what has been described as the decay of their built environment, the decline in amenity. People are not feeling as safe as they once did.  Young women are scared to head out at tonight by themselves and increasingly homelessness and issues around drugs and alcohol are causing great sadness.

In general, many in our electorate are feeling let down by the parties who were voted in to represent them.

Ultimately however much of Prahran is socially progressive, we have a deep compassion for others but want to once again feel safe in our community.
